"I get it; I really do" - revised 2024

A little while back I took a stab a writing a poem & I titled it: "I get it; I really do". In a recent creative writing class I took, I was brought back to this poem and decided I'd revised it a bit to try to add more clarity to what I was trying to convey in thought and feeling then. This is that revised poem.

I get it; I really do (2024)

Emancipation,

I get it; I really do.

To emancipate is to be freed.

Not Just in Act or Deed, but to be Freed in thought…

What does this mean?

True liberation, requires transformation,

I get it; I really do.

But in a life that’s been directed by none,

Not even one’s Mum –

How would you suppose I take direction from you?

But,

I get it; I really do.

It was my choice to bond with you –

"So, how’s that my excuse? "

See, I get this, and I really do do

Though, how can the unbound be expected to fetter anew?

Is it not freedom we are taught to purse?

The shackles, though loving, bring great pain to bear.

So while I lie in despair,

I ponder –

Is love just a prison reformed, painted in a brighter hue?

Do you get this?

Do you really do?
